Chongqing University (simplified Chinese: 重庆大学; traditional Chinese: 重慶大學; pinyin: Chóngqìng Dàxué) is a comprehensive national university in the Shapingba District of Chongqing municipality, China. It is a member of the Project 211 and Project 985 which aims to transform Chinese universities into better research institutions.[1]

History

Chongqing University was founded in 1929. It became a provincial university in 1935. It was upgraded to a national university in 1942. Chongqing Jianzhu University (Chinese: 重庆建筑大学) and Chongqing Architectural College (Chinese: 重庆建筑专科学校) merged with Chongqing University on May 31, 2000.[2]

Chongqing University has 27 colleges plus the graduate school, the City College, the College of Continuing Education and the College of Networking Education. As of 2006, the university has an enrollment of 57,472 students, 12,000 of which are master's and doctoral students.[3][4]
